Equipment Names and Uses

You need to draw a labelled diagram of how you will set up the equipment and also list any other equipment you will need. Use the images below to help you.

REMEMBER TO LABEL YOUR DIAGRAMS!
  Name Diagram Description
Tripod Used to support things when they are being heated with a bunsen burner.
Stopclock Used to time experiments, measures in seconds, minutes and hours. All times should usually be converted into seconds.

Time Convertor
Beaker Used for containing liquids. Can also be used to make rough measurements of how much liquid but is not accurate. For accurate measurements use a measuring cylinder.
Thermometer Used for measuring temperature. Temperature tells you the average energy of the molecules. Thermometers measure in oC (Degrees Centigrade)
Measuring Cylinder Used for accurately measuring the volume of liquid. Measurements are in cm3 (or ml, they are the same thing!)
Conical Flask Used for carrying out chemical reactions involving liquids. More useful than a beaker because the mouth of the flask can be closed to trap any gases produced.
Rubber Bung Used to block the mouth of a test tube or flask to stop gases escaping.
Spatula Used for measuring out small quantities of powdered chemicals. It is not an accurate measurement so you should weigh chemicals using a balance if needed.
Digital Balance Used for accurately measuring the mass of something. Measurements are in g (grams).
Gas Syringe Used for accurately measuring volume of gas produced in a reaction. Measurements are in cm3.
Bunsen Burner Used for heating.
Test Tube Used for carrying out small scale chemical reactions. Do not use if liquids are likely to bubble over (eg when heating liquids!)
Boiling Tube Used for heating small amounts of liquids or carrying out chemical reactions where small amounts of liquid need heating.
